Chapter 181
Joshua pursed his lips into a tight line. His eyes were downcast, hiding whatever emotions might have been
swirling inside him. He kept quiet. No one knew what he's thinking.
After a moment, Ray spoke with a serious tone, "Joshua, remember this: you can't let such a thing happen again.
You're the only heir of the Fisher family. Don't risk your future for a woman, got it?"
Joshua's hands, hanging by his sides, tensed a little. His eyes were shadowed, but he replied deeply, "I
understand."
Ray then turned to Ben, saying, "From here on, unless Joshua's breaking our family rules or the law, don't get in
his way."
Ben felt a wave of frustration. Even though he was still strong and able, the family's power and legacy had
skipped over him, straight from Ray to Joshua. Despite his frustrations, Ben didn't dare voice any objections in
front of Ray.

The mess started with his illegitimate kid. If he had been more disciplined back then, none of this would have
happened. He had no right to challenge this, no matter how upset or unwilling he felt. Ben comforted himself
with the thought that at least his son was the one in charge, not soutsider. He nodded and said, "I
understand."
A cold wave swept in. The temperature plunged below freezing, and Oak Lake saw its first snowfall of the
season. Winter days are short. It was already dark when Allison left the law firm. Snowflakes drifted down gently,
looking even more romantic under the neon lights.
Allison stood by the street, reaching out to catch a few flakes. The biting northern wind was relentless, so she
pulled her scarf tighter. Her breath was visible in the chilly air. Joshua's Maybach was parked at the curb. When
Allison headed towards it, Joshua had already stepped out, walking briskly to meet her. They had planned to visit
Peyton at the hospital together.
Once the car door was shut, the sound of the howling wind was shut out. Joshua wrapped an arm around Allison
in the backseat, holding her hands in his and rubbing them gently. Her hands were freezing. Joshua looked down
with concern. "Why didn't you wear gloves? Your hands are all red from the cold."
Allison sniffed. "It's just a few steps."
"Even so," Joshua insisted, warming her hands, "Make sure to wear them next time."
Allison nodded softly.
Allison pushed the door to the hospital room open, and found & Peyton staring out at the snow, tost in thought.
The young girl was in her own world, and did not notice Allison and Joshua's entrance.
"Peyton, how are you?" Allison said warmly, placing her things on the small table. Peyton snapped out of her
daydream, turning her head, Her eyes flickered with admiration and curiosity when she saw Joshua.
Allison introduced him with a smile. "Peyton, this is my boyfriend, Joshua."
Peyton's eyes brightened with understanding, and she greeted cheerfully, "Hello, Joshua."
Joshua remembered Allison's reminders to greet the girl with a smile, and not to scare her with his usual serious

Peyton shyly looked away with her lips pressed together. Allison moved closer, sitting by Peyton's bedside.
Peyton's complexion was paler, her eyes were sunken, and she looked frail.
Allison's heart ached with a heavy sorrow.
She fought back her sadness, pulling a fluffy hat from the gift bag. Her eyes crinkled with a smile. "Peyton, |
brought you a gift. Do you like it?"
Peyton's eyes sparkled with delight, and she beamed, "I love it! Thank you, Allison. Over the past few days,

affectionately dropped the formeline
"Ms. and just called her "Allison."

Peyton eagerly took the hat, immediately swapping it for the one she was wearing. Her eyes were full of
anticipation as she asked Allison, "Does it look good?"
