Chapter 136

Christiana’s POV

The tension in the car was suffocating as Alex drove us to a secluded spot overlooking the city.

city. Noon sunligh

sunlight streamed through the windows, Bluminating every sharp line of his face, the rigid set of his jaw, the

hard press of his lips, the shadow that seemned to darken his expression despite the Lightness around us.

He hadn't said a word since we left Daniel's house. The silence between us felt thicker than ever, an invisible

wall that neither of us dared to breach.

| watched his hands grip the steering wheel, his knuckles white from the pressure. He looked like he was barely

holding himself together, like any word | said might be the one to make him unravel,

“Alex. | began softly, breaking the silence, but he didn’t even glance at me.

“Not now,” he said, his voice low and controlled, but the tension underneath was impossible to miss.

| shrank back into my seat, biting my lip as guilt gnawed at me. The rest of the drive passed in that same

suffocating quiet, and when he finally pulled into a small clearing at the edge of the overlook, | hesitated before

slightly, rustling the trees and carrying the faint hun of the city below us, but it didn’t ease the heaviness in the

air.

| stood by the car for a moment, watching him. His back was to me, his hands gripping the railing as he stared

out at the city stretched below. The noon sun cast harsh shadows around him, but he looked unmovable, like he

was made of stone.

Taking a deep breath, | walked toward him, stopping a few steps away. “Alex” | said, my voice trembling

He didn’t turn, but | saw his shoulders tense. For a long moment, he didn’t say anything, and the silence was

almost unbearable.

“Please.” | continued, trying to keep my voice steady. “Letexplain.”

Finally, he spoke, his tone quiet but razor-sharp. “Explain what, Christiana?” He turned slightly, just enough for

“So, what?” Alex's voice rose slightly, but he still didn’t facefully. “You thought it was your responsibility to

I shook my head, the guilt in my chest growing heavier. “No, Alex. | wasn’t trying to fix him. | was trying to help

“That's the problem,” he cutoff, turning to facefully now. His eyes, usually so warm and full of life, were

His words hitlike a punch to the gut. My lips parted, but no sound cout at first. “I didn’t think it would

He let out a sharp exhale, running a hand through his hair. “Of course, it hurt me,” he said, his tone quieter but
