Mabel couldn’t grasp her words. She only perceived that Elyse was insulting her parents. She shouted back,
“Who do you think you are? A mere snob. If | were my parents, | wouldn't have adopted you. I'd rather strangle
you so you could go to hell with your foolish parents!”
The sharp sound of a slap echoed clearly.
Elyse, rubbing her stinging hand and smiling coldly, looked at Mabel’s shocked expression and remarked,

unreasonable child.
Her outburst attracted the attention of other patients, who kept their distance, wary that she might have lost her
